Introduction

Film studies is a discipline that focuses on the various theoretical, historical, critical, and practical approaches to film and film making. In this discipline, film and the cinema are studied for their artistic, commercial, educational and entertainment values. When examining film studies as a discipline, it is important to note that it is a very broad discipline, that is composed of two major discourse communities: Film production, and film theory. Within these two different umbrella communities, what counts as information, knowledge, and expertise, are two very different things. Once this is understood, it is easier to rhetorically understand film studies as a discipline.
