Expertise in Film Studies

Film studies, though it may not seem like it by examining it through its various discourse communities, is a creative discipline. Hence fourth, expertise or mastery of any aspect of film, comes from practice, and taking the information and knowledge of your specialty, and being able to use it to create something meaningful.

Just because you understand or know something about sound design, doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to create good sound effects. Just because you have knowledge about the films of Ozu or Kurosawa, doesn’t mean that you can form a meaningful argument about them. In the end, just like in many disciplines, expertise or mastery comes down to practice. Once you’ve practiced enough, you’ll be able to create something that is respectable.

For example, Stanly Kubrick, one of the most famous directors of all time, had to re-shoot a single shot of a ball rolling in “The Shining”, fifty separate times, just to get the look that he wanted. A bit neurotic, but then again, it’s Kubrick.
